Handicap Scooters and their Benefits

For improving the lot of people with disabilities who, for any one of a great number of reasons, may not be able to leave their home unattended, handicap scooters provide a welcome means for enjoying the kind of freedom that is every person's right. These ingenious mobility aids are known by many different names such as disability scooters, electric scooters, electric mobility scooters, mobility scooters, wheelchair scooters and many more. What their basic use is mainly for is to provide a means of personal transportation that gives people freedom of mobility for those who need it. That includes the elderly, the physically incapacitated, the handicapped and anyone who is unable to otherwise get around without difficulty or discomfort unaided.

Handicap scooters are produced in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some are made with three wheels while some are made with four. They are all manufactured around a simple formula, which is that of a small, compact and relatively lightweight vehicle built for carrying a single person and powered by electricity. The power supply is stored in a battery configuration in the base of the vehicle and those batteries are simply recharged overnight enabling the scooter to be available next day for use.

These vehicles provide people who would otherwise be housebound with the ability to transport themselves to the stores and visit their friends and family that live within a reasonable distance of their homes. To put it concisely, these handicap scooters provide people with independence that would not otherwise have it.

How Mobile is Mobile?

In general, handicap scooters are capable of going at between approximately 8mph and 25mph, although it is rare to come across the faster models and in general they are governed to below 20mph. During their actual use, speed is affected by a number of prevailing circumstances that should be factored into the equation. They will include the rider's weight plus any additional load such as groceries or other packages or parcels, the quality of footpaths or road surfaces travelled along, whether it is hilly or flat, the tires at their correct pressure and the amount of charge remaining in the batteries.

The range of a handicapped scooter with a fully charged battery will vary from model to model. In general, you should expect to travel anywhere between 8 and 20 miles under favorable conditions including level ground, straight, even paths, calm weather conditions and with no obstacles to have to navigate around. The maximum range will similarly be affected by the weight of the rider, tire pressure being correct and carrying no extra loads. The scooter will also travel further on a fully charged battery than it would do on a partially charged battery.

The amount of weight a handicap scooter can carry will depend on the model, but in general these vehicles can carry riders up to 180 pounds. There are some larger and heavier duty vehicles that are manufactured especially for heavier riders, although the units are bulkier and naturally heavier as they need to carry additional battery weight.

Handicap Scooter Quality

The quality of a handicap scooter is an important factor to think about when making your choice of which one to purchase. There are reputable brands with names that you will know or can research. Unfortunately, there are also many overseas factories that build cheap, low quality electric scooters that can be found alongside the better quality ones on the market. Some overseas manufacturers will even attempt to mimic established brands in looks and color schemes, but their lower quality build which utilizes cheap materials produce poor quality vehicles that compromise on safety.

Cheaply made handicap scooters are prone to breaking down frequently and giving their owners a heap of trouble once purchased. Repairs to these can turn out to be expensive as spare parts are difficult to find or totally unavailable. Cheap, unbranded scooters will end their short lives on the scrap heap because that's all they are good for!

Far too many people are duped into buying these cheap models by disreputable vendors. Occasionally you may find some cheap imported mobility scooters being sold in a reputable store, so you will need to be on your guard. You will save yourself a load of trouble, anger and frustration by doing some research prior to buying and steering clear of those poor quality models by knowing what to look for.

Here are some things that you can look out for:

Finally, remember that it is false economy to purchase goods that come with a cheap price tag. This also applies to handicap scooters, so be prepared to pay a little more and enjoy peace of mind.
